Cross your fingers …

After getting shut out of our camera yesterday, we had it back today to catch this late-season pile of crabapples on the ground, although we’re not holding our breath. Monte tinkered with the camera, a Nikon D70, at the office, but he doesn’t think it’s a permanent fix.

The Tuesday quote of the day doesn’t even come from our walk. Bonnie and Mollie from the Pioneer Composing Department also walk together, taking walks near the Pioneer.  They told Bethany that today, someone approached them with a question.

“Are you the Trail Mix girls?”

“No, but we work with them.”

Funny! … And they even have the same color hair as we do — one blonde, one red.

We walked on sidewalks today and ended up on Beltrami Avenue instead of Minnesota or America, or sometimes Irvine, which is where we tend to gravitate toward when we’re not on the trail. This garden caught my eye as we turned onto Beltrami. Interesting usage of wood posts.

We had a little wind today, as you can see from the taller vegetation in this planter:

And we saw a cat that for a moment made me wonder if mine had gotten outside somehow (it wasn’t too far away from my house). It looks just like Max.

I love today’s mystery butterfly photo, but Bethany gets credit for the idea, which she tried to pull off yesterday with the malfunctioning camera:

Our last puzzler was the word “HOP” from the Economy Shop sign downtown.

We walked today – not a terribly long walk, but at least a 60-minuter. It was pleasant, fun and pretty darn warm (We mentioned that a few times today). I even got these great shots of the routes we decided to take, based solely on the amount of shade up ahead of us.

I had a great Puzzler, some interesting tree shots and a pretty picture of a bench.

So what happened?

Well, my favorite work camera, the resurrected D-70, appears to be dead. I’m not 100 percent sure on that, but it was displaying the same problem that took it out of commission last winter. It now is left in Monte’s very capable hands.

We shall see.

So, without photos, a walking blog is apparently pretty boring! I could tell you what routes we took (down Minnesota, then 15th, then Park), but without the views, it’s hard to really describe. And very clinical, which is not our style.

But I don’t want to bore any of you who stopped by!

Zooming in on a beautiful day in Bemidji

I was really looking forward to walking today, after coming up with a quick fix to a problem that had my Canon S5 IS out of commission for the past 14 months. So it was great to see a beautiful day to take our beautiful trail along beautiful Lake Bemidji. Can you tell my revived camera has me in a good mood? :)

Since the camera has a 10X zoom (oh, how I have missed that zoom lens!), I figured it would be a good test to capture the Bemidij Regional Event Center from across the lake and get some pictures of the birds.

The birds don’t stick around very long when we’re around, but we can usually get a few shots.

We often notice this tree that lightly dips into the water along the trail, one of a number of trees that find their own way to grow. I guess they’re kind of like people who don’t quite fit into “normal” ways to grow. :)

I don’t know if we’ve ever taken a picture of this bridge from this direction. I was trying to get something short and narrow for the top of the blog, but this really didn’t work. We ended up cropping a picture Monte took of us walking past “Pioneer Lake,” which forms behind the Pioneer after rains and snowmelt!

Above and below are the stone-wall-lined steps from the trail up to 10th Street (I think) and Lake Boulevard. I never tire of taking photos of these steps. I think they’re beautiful. I love stone.

I also like pictures of the sun peering through stuff. :)

Yesterday’s puzzler was from the sign on Exhaust Pros. I thought that was a pretty good one!

Sometimes, we feel like we are the Exhaust Pros because we’re so good at being exhausted! ;)

Trail Mix goes back to school!

Trail Mix didn’t exactly go to class or anything today, but we did cut through Bemidji State University’s campus today, just to observe. It was such a pretty day to be outside. We found several students just hanging around outside, relaxing against the trunk of a tree. Possibly studying.

We also found some good signs for folks like Active Living, who are encouraging more bike-riding for work or commuting purposes:

We ended up with a strange sort of walk. We walked from Laurie’s downtown to the fire hall (for my daily fire reports) to the Law Enforcement Center (for my daily cop reports) and then down Minnesota Avenue to 15th Street, from where we cut on over the BSU campus. Once we got some shots of campus activity, we went back to the Lake Bemidji West Shore Trail for about a block before cutting over to “our” trail. So we, essentially, walked our route backwards today.

It was just a perfect day to be outside; the weather was absolutely ideal.

It was nice being back on the trail. I have, unfortunately, not kept up as much with my exercising in the past 1-2 months — and it showed. I tired more quickly today than I did in, say, June. But it’ll come again. I just need to walk more than once every week or two!

Of course, Laurie, conversely, has done much better lately. She walked a lot in Minneapolis, so she looked like a pro today.

She also was enthusiastic when I asked if she was OK going through the trail backward, which offered a few unique challenges (i.e. climbing walls we are not used to and going uphill instead of downhill in certain spots).

Laurie: “We’re not long for the rugged part. We haven’t been on the trail for a while.


All in all, it was  a pleasant afternoon.

Other things that caught our attention today…

1. This student, who was, for some reason, carrying an Easter basket of some kind into a BSU building. (We’re guessing it was filled with candy. And, yes, we were tempted to ask for some. But he seemed to be in a hurry.)

2. This pretty house. (Doesn’t that swing look inviting? I asked Laurie if she wanted to sit, but she was, understandingly, not in favor of walking through someone’s yard. Much less sitting on their swing.)


3. This super nifty car decoration. (Although I must say that while I was drawn to it, I would never have one myself. I remember getting pulled over once, when I was in college, at 2 a.m. after I got off work, because I had a cross hanging from my mirror. I’m sure the police officer, perhaps, wondered if I had been out partying or something. But, still, I learned that night that the decoration was more of a hassle than anything…)

So that’s about it from us today…

The answer from … I don’t know when … is that the green tiles are located on the exterior of the AnnTiques building next to the Economy Shop.

Orange leaves? In August?

Orange leaves are pretty, and I welcome the changing of the colors. But not in August.

In fact, I don’t really want to see yellow or orange or red until October. And I prefer no white until December, but I’m usually disappointed there.

Bethany steered me toward this tree, located on the lawn outside the post office.

“Oh no,” I said, fearing the early onset of fall, which would not be so bad if it didn’t hint at an early onset of winter.

Back at work, Anne peered over my shoulder from her desk behind me and saw the leaves.

“What is THAT?”

I think she hoped it was a file photo.

Maybe it’s just a fluke and we won’t see anymore orange until October. But I seem to remember the leaves turning early last year, too, so I won’t hold my breath.

Today we ran across a dog who wanted nothing more than to bark at us

I tried to get a picture of him, but he was super-quick.

So I got him bounding off to the left …

Today’s walk included visits to the Fire Hall and the Law Enforcement Center.

We were talking to the guys in the Fire Hall when a call came in. It’s cool to see how fast they go from waiting for a call to answering one, as they don the gear, hop in the truck, start the siren and head out within a minute or two. I would think that to do that kind of work, it helps to have enthusiasm for excitement and an appreciation for the adrenaline rush, along with the ability to go from zero to 60 with no warning!

Mirror, Mirror on the Garage …

We rarely get a chance to get a picture of ourselves together, so we couldn’t resist this full-length mirror propped up against a garage as we walked today for the first time since I took a week’s vacation to go to the Twin Cities for the Minnesota Fringe Festival.

Last week was sweltering as I walked the streets of Minneapolis between theater venues. One day, I had to stop and use my shirt to wipe my eyes because sweat had run into my eyes and the salt hurt.

But it cooled down by Sunday, the day before I came home. And after yesterday’s torrential rains, it was chilly outside here with lots of puddles, but it was so nice to get back to walking with Bethany! Our work hours don’t overlap very much, so we do a lot of talking in that hour of walking, some of it about work, some of it about other stuff. It’s an enjoyable hour for me.

I realized how long it had been since we walked in the Mississippi-Park Avenue area. There were flowers that hadn’t been there before, but most notable was the progress on the Ours to Serve Village of Hope.

The homeless shelter is really taking shape. It’s a great building.

These bushes are flowering nicely. We saw a lot of nice color today. I guess the rain has been good for the grass, flowers and trees.

Today we have photos for both the dog and cat lovers.

First, the dog, who bayed at us twice today, along with a puppy that has grown massively since the last time we saw it:

And then there was the Dog That Wasn’t There ..

Bethany pointed out this pretty bloom on a rose bush, and I started to try to lean over a fence to take the photo, but I kept hearing a dog barking, so I was cautious. But after a few really lousy photos, I looked up and saw that the dog was in a fenced-in yard next door, so no worries. :)

Just playing around

I’m just goofing around with some new appearances. Any thoughts?

Walking Minneapolis

The Trail Mix duo is split up this week as I am on vacation in Minneapolis, where I am taking in eight of the 11 days of the Minnesota Fringe Festival.

This is involving quite a bit of walking. Yesterday my Fringer Friend Ben San Del ("The Nice Guy’s Guide to Awkward Sex" at the Mixed Blood Theater) and I walked from the Bedlam Theater to the Playwrights Center to the four-theater University of Minnesota Rarig Center to the Mixed Blood Theater. I should say we RAN to the Playwrights Center, as we thought the show was at the Rarig but realized it was farther, so we ran in the ridiculous heat and made it right on time (no late seating).

And my knee is paying for it. Hopefully I don’t have to do the physical therapy thing again!

I saw "Grimaldi’s Chicken," by Jeremiah Liend of Bemidji, at the Playwrights Theater (which also involved a driving version of running to make it in time), starring Eric Nelson, Joel Ward, Bretanne Ostberg and Mallory McKay. I loved it. The crowd was small but appreciative.

A temporary goodbye

Hi all.

Well, we knew this was coming, even if our readers did not: Trail Mix is taking a hiatus for about a week or so while Laurie is out of town for the Fringe Festival in Minneapolis.

The timing it actually pretty good: With the Primary Election tomorrow, it was going to be a difficult walking week for me anyway.

So check back next week and we will, hopefully, regain some sort of schedule again.

(It’s funny how we’re actually more dependable at walking in the wintertime, when it’s -20 degrees outside. For some reason, the summers just keep us too busy!)

Mushrooms, lawn vacuuming and lots of rocks …

I may not think they make good eating, but mushrooms can make for good pictures. They were all over the place in this yard, but don’t ask me where. Bethany is the one who remembers things. Northland Apartments, maybe?

The good news is that we have two days of walking to blog about. The bad news is that the route was pretty much the same … from my house to the Fire Hall and Law Enforcement Center for their reports and then up and down in the Minnesota and America Avenue area.

This stopped us in our tracks and made Bethany sputter:

"You think they’re mow <pause> … vacuuming the yard? Or is it art? Maybe it’s art?"

It almost looks like the statue guy at Headwaters School of Music and the Arts is resting after some vacuuming.

The hostas at the Fire Hall are amazingly big. I don’t think I’ve seen any bigger ones around town.

 The number of rocks in this garden is amazing. The picture doesn’t even begin to show the volume of the impressive rock garden on a big corner lot. Look below for two more photos:

 

And, finally for Monday: Stuff on the ground:

This is one of mini-wallets that hold a driver’s license and credit cards. We dropped it off at the Law Enforcement Center on the way back downtown. Today, we picked up an SD card that must have been removed from a camera. There were pictures on it from the Keg ‘N’ Cork, so we’ll bring it there and hope they know the people in the pictures!

We don’t have many photos for today, as our big camera was in use and my little camera’s batteries died. We didn’t get the SD card, but we have some lovely socks:

 

This is a pathway to someone’s house from the driveway. It’s so beautifully secluded for those few feet, yet the front of the house still has decent visibility.
